The internet has become a necessity in today’s world. Most people depend on it to carry out their daily tasks. Therefore, they get frustrated when the internet stops working suddenly. One of the most common errors that lead to this problem is the Err_Name_Resolution_Failed error.

A number of people report that they see this error on their browser when their internet breaks down. Most times, reloading the web page again and again doesn’t resolve this issue. Even rebooting the entire computer systems and restarting the web browser is of no avail.

According to the web browser, this problem happens when a web page at a given web address is down temporarily. It also happens when that web page gets moved permanently to a new address. The web browser itself classifies this error as “Error 137”.

The problem with this error is that it is particularly deceiving. Even when no website is accessible to you, other programs will continue functioning. Also, ping tests done through the command prompt will show that there is nothing wrong with the internet connection.

In this article, we will present a detailed guideline on why this error happens and how Windows users can fix this issue with minimal effort.

There can be multiple reasons for this problem. However, the majority of times the culprit is a type of virus that disrupts how the internet connection works in your system.  Other, the system isn’t compatible with the newly installed software, and as a result, the internet connection is disrupted.

Whatever the initial cause may be, the core reason behind this kind of interference disturbance

is in the socket settings of the operating system. It directly affects the TCP/IP stack in the OS. Experts believe that these kinds of disturbances don’t occur on their own.

Usually, these problems happen when malware tries to change the socket setting or the TCP/IP function. However, as we have discussed before, newly installed programs can also disrupt these settings when they come into contact with the system.

People often see these problems arise in their system after they install new programs that communicate with the internet directly. It’s not even about foreign programs; Window’s own functions can create confusion between protocols and interfere with the internet service.

Entities within the Windows’ Winsock catalog (referred to as Layered Service Providers) are actually .DLL files that inject themselves into the TCP/IP stack. The real job of these .DLL files is to organize the communication flow between different programs that try to access the internet. These files also monitor how the Internet connects back to these applications.

Therefore, it’s not uncommon for these .DLL files to malfunction and cause problems with your internet connection. Regardless of what the cause is, it’s safer to have your system checked for malware once you see this error on your system.

There are a number of ways you can resolve the Err_Name_Resolution_Failed error, depending on what caused it in the first place. However, you can try one of these measures one by one to resolve this issue.

Option 1: Netsh Winsock Reset

One of the most common reasons behind this error is the malfunctioning of Netsch Winsock within the OS itself. We recommend you to follow these steps to fix this issue.

Step #1

First of all, open the command prompt to access the settings of your operating system. A short key of accessing the command prompt is pressing Windows Key + R and typing “cmd” in the subsequent dialogue box and hit Enter.

Step #2

After the command prompt opens, you will need to type in a few commands to troubleshoot this internal problem. Type the following commands one by one in the order they have been written here. Also, hit Enter once you type in a single command and make sure that you don’t make any typing mistakes while you type these commands.

  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /all
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • ipconfig /renew
  • netsh int ip set dns
  • netsh winsock reset

Note: These steps will help resolve the error if it was caused by the netsh Winsock entities in your OS. However, you’ll need administrator privileges to carry out steps in your device.

Step #3

After you have gone through the procedure of subsequently entering commands in the CMD, restart your computer. Check whether the internet has started working or not. If the problem persists, try out other methods in this article to restart your internet connection.

Option 2: Change the DNS Address

Sometimes, your router’s DNS servers can affect your internet speed and even cause your connection to stop working. Changing the DNS address can help the internet connection to start working again. Just follow the steps below to change the DNS address on your device:

Step #1

To proceed with this method, just right-click the network connection icon (pic) on the bottom right corner of your screen. After that, choose the Open Network and Sharing Center to access your internet settings.

Step #2

Proceed to the Change Adapter Settings on the left-hand side of the window pane.

Step #3

In the Network Adapter Settings, see which internet connection is active. After that, right-click on that connection and choose the Properties option.

Step #4

Click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option from the list of Properties. After the IPv4 option gets highlighted, click on the Properties option in the window pane.

Step #5

Consequently, you will see Internet Protocol Version 4 Properties. Just choose the “Use the following DNS server addresses” instead of the “Obtain DNS server address automatically.

After that, fill in the DNS addresses to change your previous DNS server address. For instance, you can type in the following addresses in both Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server options.

  • Preferred DNS server:
  • Alternate DNS server:

After making these changes, click on the OK option to save your new settings and exit.

Note: When you open these settings and you’re able to see the original Preferred DNS server, save that address somewhere. Saving that address might come in handy in the future.

Step #6

Check whether the internet has started working or not.

Option 3: Run a Virus Scan
